SiGBA and CATT decided to co-sponsor the public forum because more attention has been placed on LEED certification and other green building standards in the last few months. The National Association of Home Builders has its own rating system and another rating system has been developed by "Build It Green." Additionally, the topic of developing mandatory standards has surfaced as Truckee prepares to update its Development Code.

The goal of this forum is to provide an opportunity to hear the advantages and disadvantages of different rating systems and the pros and cons of mandatory standards. Speakers will cover the short term vs. longterm costs and benefits issue and why controversy exists about labeling a building material or product as "green." The forum wraps up with an interactive "open mic" session with all speakers and the audience exchanging ideas and information. This forum is open to the public.

WHAT is LEED?
From the USGBC website LEED: Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. LEED addresses all building types including new construction, commercial interiors, core & shell, operations & maintenance, homes, neighborhoods, and specific applications such as retail, multiple buildings/campuses, schools, healthcare, laboratories and lodging. The LEED rating system was created by members of the US Green Building Council, representing every sector of the building industry. They continue to refine LEED. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit 501c3 organization composed of leaders from every sector of the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. USGBC has more than 10,000 member organizations and 75 regional chapters united to advance their mission of transforming the building industry to sustainability.

WHAT is GREEN BUILDING?

Effective environmental design and sustainable development are reflected in site planning, project design, choice of materials, construction techniques, energy efficiency, and water conservation, among other aspects.

ALL ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.
