5 Nanotech Novelties For Green Buildings
Look closely - very closely - and you'll find nanotechnology in more products than you'd expect.
Nanotechnology, or the control of matter at dimensions of roughly 1 to 100 nanometers, has been applied to steel, glass, concrete, paint, batteries and more. The field gained clout in 2003 when the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill authorizing $2.4 billion in spending during the next three years on nanotech research.
Total global demand for nanoscale materials, tools and devices is expected to reach $28.7 billion by 2008, according to a study by Realistic Market Evaluation. Nanotechnology holds great potential within the construction industry, says David Sykes, director of strategy firm Remington Partners. Sykes is involved with CoreNet Global, an association for corporate real estate and related professionals working to get the word out about the benefits of nanotech in building products.877
