SiGBA would like to thank our sponsors who are helping make Tahoe GreenFEST a reality

2010 Tahoe Quarterly Mountain Home Awards
SiGBA is working closely with our friends at Tahoe Quarterly to increase the number of green applicants to their annual Home Awards program. Over the last two years, SiGBA has maintained a seat on the review board, helping ensure environmentally appropriate projects get the recognition they deserve for helping protect our natural environment.

We hope to see a variety of green projects submitted this year, showcasing the latest in environmental design, energy efficiency, and renewable energy systems.

The program is open to building projects throughout the region, including the Northern Sierra, Reno foothills and Carson Valley. Construction must have been completed within the last five years.

Exhibit at Tahoe GreenFEST, SiGBA's Green Living Expo
Tahoe City - July 11-12, 2009

SiGBA presents Tahoe City's first green living festival. This carbon-neutral event on North Lake Tahoe will feature businesses with interactive booths promoting their green products and services. Learn more about new technologies in renewable energy, innovative methods of sustainability, and ways we can all do our part to conserve the beauty and natural resources of our planet. All while enjoying live music, organic foods, beer and wine, and too many activities too count! There is something planned for every age group and every walk of life. This is a zero waste event you don't want to miss!

Exhibits are open from 9am to 5pm on both days and the event ends with a free concert on Commons Beach Sunday night as part the outdoor concert series put on by TCDA and TCPUD drawing 1,500 visitors each year.

The electricity used to power the fun and festivities will be carbon-neutral, generated on site by Bently Biofuels using fuel produced from locally recycled cooking oils.

Tesla Motors will make their official public High Sierra debut at Tahoe GreenFEST. They will be showcasing two of their Tesla Roadsters, the California-built electric super car which is quickly dispelling the perceived limits of electric cars.

Sustainable Education Coalition Partnership
By Jennifer Huntleysmith, University of Reno Nevada, and Co-Chair of greenUP!
and John Arsenault, SiGBA Education Director

Wondering if we couldn't stimulate a discussion about sustainability between residents all along the Truckee river watershed, John Arsenault (of SiGBA), Jen Huntleysmith (of UNR and greenUP!) and Christine McMorrow (of SWEP) pulled together a brainstorming workshop at the Tahoe Science Center on Saturday, May 30. With very short notice, a turnout of nearly 30 agency officials, business owners, community organizers and educators, spent the morning exploring challenges and possibilities for sustainability in our region. Instead of being purely informational, the workshop was deeply participatory, starting with a simulation of sustainable and unsustainable practices that demonstrated the need for action and relationship building. After extensive discussions, workshop participants developed an extensive list of outcomes and community goals for sustainability.

The group plans to meet again towards the end of August to revisit the goals and outcomes and decide on the details of future initiatives. If you would like to be a part of this coalition, click on the contact us link.

Truckee Home and Buidling Show
On Memorial Day Weekend, SiGBA participated in the Truckee Home Show, Green Symposium & Home Tour. We set up our exhibit, sponsored the speaker series, and facilitated a home tour. The home tour was a hit! Approximately 20-30 participants visited three homes: Stouman Residence (W.End Donner Lake,) passive solar home (Whitehorse/Glenshire), and the Schnerenberger Residence (Sierra Meadows).

We will feature some of the speakers from the speaker symposium this fall as part of our live-green build-green speaker series. Be sure to check out Tamara's list of sustainability resources and Ward Young's article about their new passive solar, LEED Certified, Forest Service building in Truckee.

Chapter News - Foothills
By Elizabeth Dunn, your hard working Secretary of the Board
and Jim Crowley, Foothills Board Chairman

As Spring roared in like a lion, the foothill chapter awoke from its long winter nap and there has been a buzz of activity. A second speaker event was held about tightening up the building envelope and informing the audience on how SIPs, ICFs and Advance Framing Techniques can help them achieve the tight envelope.

Foothills will have their 3rd Speaker Event on Home Performance by Balance Point and Barbara Hernesman on June 17th at the Nevada County Contractors Association in Grass Valley. It is always an informative presentation.

We want to give one of our newest SiGBA members, Mike Leslie, a High Five for his energy since he has become a member of SiGBA AND announce his stepping up to take the Vice-Chair Position on the Board of the Foothills Chapter. We want to thank Dan Perunko for all the work he did while serving in that position. Mike, in his short time as a SiGBA member, has quickly become a rising star and a real asset to SIGBA.

The Foothills Chapter of SiGBA would like to congratulate the following members for becoming Certified Green Building Professionals: Bruce Dickson, David Good, Debra Little, and Mike Leslie.

They received their certifications after participating in the Build it Green Workshop hosted by CATT and sponsored by SiGBA in Truckee in April. They all passed the exam, displaying a high level of knowledge of green building practices.
