| FEATURE STORY: Local Home Builder Walks on Kitchen Floors from 1899 |
| | | Truckee, CA - JD HOSS Hardwoods & Carpet recently completed a custom installation of reclaimed hardwood floors in a private Tahoe City home.
What are reclaimed floors? In this case, the flooring started off as the Magnolia Railroad Station built in 1899, a stop along the B & O Railroad in West Virginia. Old buildings like the Magnolia building were built out of old growth trees, old and large trees, typically 150 to 200 years old, and with a very fine grain structure. The line and station were abandoned in 1922, and there the building stood until recently. The old structure has been weathered by rain, snow, sun and wind, creating unique characteristics in the wood that cannot be replicated.
Local home builder, Brad Barcus Construction collaborated with JD HOSS to create a unique look in this Tahoe City home. When the Magnolia building was selected for this local project, each board was individually inspected and hand dismantled before being sent to the mill. Each board is re-milled to bring out the beautiful natural characteristics in the wood. Once in the home, the reclaimed wood floors were finished by JD HOSS with zero VOC floor finishes and zero VOC adhesives.
With an increasing demand for green building products, JD HOSS Hardwoods & Carpet is a leader in the Truckee Tahoe area in reclaimed wood flooring products. "Not only do the reclaimed wood floors add a little history to your home," said J.D. Hoss, owner, "but they provide a more sustainable option when considering hardwood flooring, preserving our natural resources." J.D. encourages people to "Think Local First." |

Green, eco, sustainable, ecological. You hear these terms used more frequently but what do they mean? These words are use to define the same thing and are often interchangeable. In recent years, the term green seems to be the most popular, but back in 1954, R. Buckminster Fuller, the famous architect and theorist, defined sustainability as: the conscious design of our total environment, in order to help make the Earth a finite resource and meet the needs of all of humanity without disrupting the ecological processes of the plant. In her article, Tammy Hooper talks about the considerations and implications of green building...
