Re-engineering the toilet for sustainable wastewater management
Municipal wastewater treatment needs rethinking. It is burdened with a pollutant load that it was never intended to manage.
Problems with the existing management system are manifold. The current system-waterborne transport and centralized treatment-consumes large amounts of fresh water. It discharges nutrients to water bodies, where they cause pollution and are lost for further use at a time when scarce raw materials are being depleted to produce synthetic mineral fertilizers. Concern is also growing about human excretion of micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals, synthetic and natural hormones, and their metabolites.
