Earthships

Earthships are earth-sheltered buildings made of tires filled and tamped with earth- which are usually arranged in a "U" shape. The structure typically faces south (in the northern hemisphere) and in front of the "U" shaped rooms is a long and rather deep hallway which is bounded on the south side by angled glass panels. This extended hallway usually is partially taken up by a large indoor garden. The windows on the sunny side admit light and heat. Earthships use the relatively constant temperature of the earth to maintain a comfortable interior environment.
