Decking

Two of the hottest types of decking claiming to leave traditional wood decking in the dust are made with either composite lumber or all vinyl, and both seem to be the future of raised-surface decking for the new American home.

Building A Green Deck in Your Yard

Open any gardening or home improvement magazine and you will find advertisements for composite wood decking materials. You've heard the names: Trex®, Easy Care Decking, Nexwood, TimberTech®, and more. They sound good. They recycle waste products into a usable decking material that doesn't rot. But how good are they really for the environment and what effect will they have on future generations?

New Decking Surfaces Help Save the Environment

"The future is in plastics," said a guest in the now classic movie, "The Graduate," to the film's main character, Benjamin, during his parents' congratulatory cocktail party. The graduate blankly stared back, no doubt thinking how dull a future in plastics might be. Those who were forward-thinking enough to stay in the plastics industry, however, must have somehow imagined what the future might hold in store for the use of their products, especially in decking and fencing by the time the 21st century rolled around.

Recycled Decking

As spring approaches, many of us are looking outside in anticipation to a wonderful summer of backyard bar-b-ques, planting flowers, and possibly relaxing. If your idea of relaxing starts with building a new deck, you are in luck. Today, with the increased number of synthetic and recycled decking companies, many green architects and homebuilders are looking toward the future, as outdoor decks come of age.
